Most scrotal swellings are harmless and straightforward to treat — but any new lump deserves a prompt, proper look.
Common, usually harmless causes
Hydrocele is a build-up of fluid around the testicle, causing a soft, usually painless swelling. Epididymal cysts are small, fluid-filled lumps that develop near the testicle and are almost always benign. Both are common and, while harmless, can be surgically corrected if they become large or uncomfortable.
While the great majority of scrotal swellings are not serious, any new lump on the testicle itself should always be examined by a doctor without delay, simply to be safe.
Treatment
Many hydroceles and cysts need no treatment at all beyond monitoring, particularly if they're small and not causing discomfort. Where a swelling is large, uncomfortable, or bothersome, straightforward day-case surgery can remove or repair it.
