Vasectomy

What does it involve?

Vasectomy is the most effective method of male sterilisation. A small puncture or incision is made in the scrotum, and each vas deferens — the tube that carries sperm — is divided, so that sperm can no longer reach the semen.

Important things to know

• A vasectomy does not provide immediate contraception — you'll need to continue using another method until this is confirmed.
• A semen test (or tests) after the procedure confirms when no sperm remain — this is essential before relying on the vasectomy alone.
• Vasectomy is generally very safe, and serious complications are rare.
• Some men experience ongoing testicular discomfort afterwards; this is uncommon, but Mr Swallow will discuss the individual risk with you.
• There is no evidence that vasectomy causes any long-term health risks, including testicular or prostate cancer.

   Consultation

   A discussion of the procedure, alternatives, and confirmation that this is the right decision for you.

   The procedure

   Usually carried out under local anaesthetic as a day case.

   Recovery at home

   Most men are back to normal activities within a few days, with some initial rest advised.

   Confirmation

   A semen test, or tests, to confirm the procedure has been successful before you stop using other contraception.
